LOL. You know I was reading the Declaration of Independence and guess what?! Among many things listed as grievance to the King, to this day, We are still angry about taxes in the US, “For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent:”
Same here, it was introduced in 1799 by the then Prime Minister William Pitt the Younger, as a temporary measure to cover the cost of the Napoleonic Wars. Still paying π
