Due to Phils shifts at work we only got through one movie this week, but what a movie. John Wick 3 ~ Parabellum (2019) directed by Chad Stahelski and starring Keanu Reeves in his 3rd iteration of John Wick, an ex-hitman now on the run for an unsanctioned killing of a member of the criminal guild known as the High Table, that deals out assassin jobs to its registered hitman. The movie follows on directly from John Wick 1 and 2, and whilst it’s probably best to see 1 & 2 first, it doesn’t really matter if you haven’t, as the plot is basic but the action is full on.
And that’s what it’s all about, the amazing fights and action. Superb choreography that has you hitting the rewind button to see it again. Great direction and commitment from the actors and stuntmen. Halle Berry plays an equally badass assassin who helps John Wick and she has two German Shepherd dogs trained to do her bidding. Berry spent 7 months learning how to fight for the movie, broke 3 ribs along the way, and she rocks the casbah when her fight scene kicks off.
The first half of the movie is really engaging, but we found by the second half the long fights got a bit wearing, but were still amazing in their precision and choreography. Lots of kung-fu, swordplay, gunplay, and anything to hand as a weapon play!
Recurring actors include Ian McShane as the manager of The Continental Hotel which is owned by the criminal consortium and where no killings can take place (they do in the end 🙂 ) his maitre de Lance Reddick, both in all 3 movies, and Lawrence Fishburn who came in on John Wick 2.
All in all they are the most ridiculous set of movies, people don’t really get shot 4 times, then fall off the edge of a tall building and survive, but it doesn’t set out to be high faluting or deep and meaningful. It’s an action movie, and has some of the very best which is not surprising as Stahelski was/is a stuntman himself, (he was stunt double for Reeves in The Matrix) and knows exactly how to ramp things up.
The ending leaves things open for a John Wick 4, and I’d be up for that so I hope that happens.

I haven’t seen any of the John Wick films yet, but they sound like great action films. Perhaps I will buy a box set on DVD when they are all out.
If you like that kind of choreographed action, I recommend this favourite of mine, with Christian Bale.

Thanks Pete, I thought I’d seen that but reading it I can’t remember anything of it, so I must seek it out!

Just had chance to check this out and I definitely haven’t seen it, it appears to be on Netflix so I’ll get it there on one of our movie nights, cheers Pete.

It’s rather dated now, but the ‘choreography’ is good. 🙂

I have seen all three of them in my Amazon PrimeVideo subscription, I love all them but the second is the one I like more. It is quite fantastic and over the top that you just have to think it is another type of world I think. Surviving the fall as the Coyote in the cartoons was funny. Maybe the suit not only protects him from bullets but from falls too x,D
The first were against a mobster, the second against hitmen in New York, the third against hitmen from around the world. I guess the fourth one will be hitmen from all corners of solar system against him :O

I think in the 4th he’ll go after the guy in the desert.

These are great movies! The fight scenes are unreal. From this one, I probably liked the antique shop fight the best, but it’s hard to pick just one.
